Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay occurred on the 24th of August 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise when she was a kid. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, let her pursue art literature and the theater during daylight hours. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's examples of that art can be an activist vehicle. DuVernay's mother also had a an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to communicate through artwork. DuVernay was brought up in Compton by her parents but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family was for many generations. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there was later the inspiration to direct a movie about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay began her first position as a publicity specialist in a small production studio right after she graduated from school. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also created a variety of social media and lifestyle networks, including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
